| RAN TO MANAGE GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE |

Jakarta 14/3/2008 (Kominfo-Newsroom) – The Ministry for the Environment has named RAN (national action plan) to effectively manage global climate change.
“For this purpose, we will make approaches, sectorally at national, regional and local level,” said the Sate Minister for Environment, Rachmat Witoelar, here Friday (14/3). Because of the complexity and dynamism of the problems, periodic evaluation will be conducted by stake-holders. Policies utilizing water, land, energy, agricultural, forestry and maritime sources will be employed in efforts aimed at mitigating and adapting negative impacts of climate change, he said. At national level, RAN management has been agreed upon by the president and will be used as reference by the Bappenas (Agency for National Development Planning). Sectoral approaches have been made by institutions concerned in view of the possibility of islands being drowned as a result of climate change, said Samsul Maarif, director general for maritime affairs and small islands and fishery. Related to the planting of a million trees, the ministry will cultivate mangrove forests to minimize the harmful effects of climate change. Mangroves will also develop marine biota or marine eco-system. Consequently it will improve the living standard of people residing in coastal areas.
